Nagasaki Bugyo gave permission to the British to go to Nezumijima Island at the mouth of Nagasaki Harbour in 1854. At the time of this photo, the British council asked the Europeans of the settlement to go on a picnic by boat to the island to commemorate the birthday of Queen Victoria (May 24th). The sail of the boat is visible behind them. Thomas Glover is lying down in the centre, Dr. Bauduin behind him, and the Consulate Bauduin with beard behind the doctor to the right. Glover is holding a rifle. Among them are women, children, and some samurais as guards. -6195-
