Thomas Glover came to Japan at the age of 21 in 1859. He established Glover Trading Company in 1861 in Nagasaki to represent Jardine Matheson Holdings and started exporting raw silk and tea. After the Incident of August 18th (Forbidden Gates Incident) in 1863, Glover supported the anti- Bakufu domains of Satsuma, Choshu, and Tosa, and succeeded in selling weapons, gunpowder, and ships.
