°»Japanese Old Photographs of the Bakumatsu-Meiji Periods°… at the Nagasaki University Library is the largest collection of old photographs, approximately 7,000, taken all over Japan from the Bakumatsu through to the Meiji period.

Funded by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, the Nagasaki University Library built the website, °»Japanese Old Photographs of the Bakumatsu-Meiji Period°…, in 1997-1998; and the website, °»High-definition Image Database of Old Photographs of Japan°… in 2001-2002. The sites are open to the public and accessed by people with different interests from all over the world.

°»Metadata Database of Japanese Old Photographs in Bakumatsu-Meiji Periods°… inherited the data from the original °»Japanese Old Photographs of the Bakumatsu-Meiji Periods°… and presented them in a new design. In addition, the Metadata Database was made in accordance with the Dublin Core (the international standard of metadata) which allows various electronic library systems and digital archives to access the Japanese old photography collection of the Nagasaki University Library.

The Development and the Construction

This database was developed and constructed in 2004-2005 by the Nagasaki University Library with the aid of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (Grant-in-Aid for Publication of Scientific Research Results) of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS).
