The Ukimido of Mangetsuji in Kashida, Otsu City. It is said to have been built by the priest Eshin during the Chotoku years (995-99) to pray for safety on the lake and the welfare of the people. It has been the theme of haiku and ukiyoe prints from ancient days, including a famous haiku by Matsuo Basho. The present Ukimido was rebuilt in 1937, and some details differ from the one in the picture.
