Sumo wrestlers enter the ring with their decorated sashes. But they are too thin to be a sumo wrestler. Sumo developed as an exercise and training feat of the warrior class during the Edo era, as well as amateur and on the spot matches and with "Hono sumo" (special matches dedicated to the Gods at a Shinto Shrine). It was a highly popular form of entertainment among the masses.
