Bronze lotus petals (four existing today) are visible at the front of the pedestal of the Great Buddha. The building with a thatched roof on the right and the sharply raking finials on the cap of the lantern in the foreground are the same as those depicted in a photograph in the May 30th, 1870 issue of The Far East, indicating that it was taken around the same time. The Great Buddha is an object of worship and climbing upon it is prohibited today.
