Soil was collected from this site to reclaim parts of the ocean in Kanagawa to build the railroad. This photograph was published in the October 2, 1871 issue of "The Far East." The writer was surprised at the vertical cliff unsupported by scaffolding and wanted to photograph the workers while they were working. Unfortunately, they were on their lunch break.
