Takahoko Island seen from the vicinity of Tomachi around 1887. Also known as Pappenberg, Takahoko was famous abroad as the site of Christian martyrdoms in the 17th century. The island on the left is Takahoko, and the one on the far right is Io Island. A man and a woman on a Japanese boat are the subject of the photograph.
