The photograph is entitled "JP Daibutzu of Kamacura /Japanese Buddha/". There are sharply raking finials protruding from the caps of the bronze lanterns, which no longer exist. The photographer is thought to be Felix Beato. Beato's travel records suggest that it was taken at the end of the Edo or the beginning of the Meiji Period. The Great Buddha is an object of worship and climbing upon it is prohibited today.
