The shamisen lute originated in Okinawa as the "jamisen." A musician named Nakanokoji of Sakai near Osaka remodeled the jamisen around 1570, and Yanagawa and Yatsuhashi established the shamisen as a musical instrument between 1624 and 1644. It was an easy instrument for young women. Two kinds of music were composed for the shamisen: narratives and songs.
