The Toshogu in Ueno is famous at present for its peony garden, but since this was built in 1980, it was not there at the time the photo was taken. The spacious grounds, now a zoo, were donated by Todo Takatora from his own residence so he would not have to go all the way to the tomb in Nikko for worship.
