A woman in Hoshuku Dance costume poses in a photograph studio. She wears a multilayer "nagajuban" and a hand towel around her neck, holds a small lantern with "banzai" written on it, and has a bamboo hat on her back. A celebratory dance, Hoshuku Odori was performed by the citizens of Kyoto at the accession of Emperor Taisho in November 1915. It is said that people participated in gala parades and neighbourhoods competed for the most fashionable costumes, fabrics, and patterns.
