Mt. Takashima was named after Takashima Kaemon, who had been contracted to reclaim the land from the sea for train tracks and who built a villa on the hill (present-day Takashima-dai) looking down on the railroad. The villa was completed in the 1880s, and its garden, which commanded a panoramic view of the city, was opened to the public.
