Karamon is the official gate to the main shrine at Toshogu. Only high ranking government officials and feudal lords, who were allowed to meet the shogun directly, could use this gate during the Edo Period. The carvings on the upper portion of the gate read "Shuntei Choken-no-gi" ( Emperor Shun's Morning Greetings). Someone is standing inside the gate. The building behind it is the Hall of Worship.
