The Niomon stands at the entrance to Taiyuin, the mausoleum of third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Taiyuin is the posthumous name bequeathed by Emperor Gokomyo after Iemitsu's death. The gate is 3.2m high and is protected by the two Nio statues "Mitsushaku Kongo" and "Naraen Kongo," the latter being visible here.
