Yasukuni Shinto Shrine was established at Kudan on June 29, 1869 to commemorate the soldiers who died in the Boshin War. Originally called Shokonsha, it was renamed Yasukuni Jinja on June 4, 1879 but continued to be called Shokonsha for some time after the name change. The bronze torii gate was built on December 31, 1887. The gate was built after the name change, but the caption says, "Shokonsha temple".
