Sarusawa Pond at Kofukuji Temple has a perimeter of approximately 300 meters. At the left rear is the Three Storied Pagoda. This pond was famous from the old days, and legends about it abound. The story of the lady-in-waiting of the Emperor Heijo throwing herself in the pond for lost love is famous in "Makura no Soshi" (a collection of essays written by Sei Shonagon).
