Although entitled "Japanese Singers," this staged scene actually shows "torioi" (bird chasing) strolling musicians. Originally part of celebratory ritual, "torioi" eventually turned into a custom called "Kadozuke-gei." The torioi were strolling female musicians wearing distinctive "amigasa" hats and playing the shamisen. They went from door to door playing music and expressing good wishes for a small charge.
