This hand-tinted picture postcard published between 1890 and 1920 is entitled "Large Iron Pot of Sofukuji, Nagasaki." A Chinese monk made the pot in 1682 to feed the masses during a famine. It has been called the "Pot to Save the Poor," the "Cauldron" and other names. Designated a Cultural Asset by Nagasaki City, it remains in the temple precincts to this day.
