The main temple and the tower burned down 8 times. The present temple was restored in 1707(the 4th year of Hoei). The third largest wooden temple in Japan after the Great Buddha temple in Todaiji and Sanjusangendo in Nara, it is 23.7m wide, 52.8m deep, and 28m tall. The only difference between this photo and the one taken during the second decade of the Meiji period is that in this photo the corridor was painted red.
