The Sofukuji temple gate is viewed from the precincts of Daikoji Temple. Sofukuji was established by Chinese residents of Nagasaki from the Fujian Province in 1642. It is a temple of the Obaku Zen Sect. The gate, first built in the single-tier Hakkyakumon style in 1673, was re-built in its present style in 1849. Built by Japanese master carpenter Ogushi Gorobei, it featured plastering over piled stones and tiles. Today, it is a nationally designated Important Cultural Asset.
