This is the British warship HMS Comus entering the port of Nagasaki around October 1880. The HMS Comus was one in a series of powerful warships that had successively sailed under the same name since 1695. This particular one is an iron, armed steamship with sailing capability, carrying 18 tons of 10-inch cannons; a warship designed for coastal battles. The ship°«s shallow bottom helped it stay upright during bombardments. The photo is taken from around present day Senshoukaku in Iwasedo-machi, the tip of Minagezaki. Part of Dejima and the settlement in Higashiyamate are visible across the harbor. The small hill on the left is Atago-yama. Koshiki Rock is visible at center right.
