The women in this photo are doing laundry by a well. A man draws water from the well into the wooden pail. The women pour the water in the washtub and do the wash. Washboards or soap were unheard of in those days. Washboards were first made in Europe in 1797 and introduced to Japan in the mid-Meiji era. Laundry soap was first sold in Japan in 1873.
