Carried on page 157 of the October 19, 1872 edition of "The Far East." According to the explanation, these are students of the samurai class from Numazu studying English grammar. They believed in the superstition that death would result if a picture were taken, so one of the students in the photo came to see the photographer at his hotel afterwards to ask if the negative could be discarded.
