The names and hometowns of the 89 teachers and s tudents in the photo are listed in the office documents of 1871. The young students in the front row had just arrived from the Yamaguchi Domain. To the right of the skull in the photo”Ēs center is van Mansvelt; Geerts and van Leeuwen are to the left of the skull. Professor NAGAYO, the president of the school, is seated in the middle just in front of the three foreign teachers. Some of the people in the picture have a chonmage, the traditional hair style worn by samurai. This photo was probably taken by UENO Hikoma, as it is printed on albumenized paper.
