Chrysanthemums were originally brought to Japan for pharmaceutical use but became popular for gardening in the Edo era. Competitions were held to contest the beauty of the chrysanthemums. September is the month of chrysanthemums in the chinese lunar calendar, and on September 9, "Toko" (climbing hills and drinking chrysanthemum wine) was held. In Japan, court events such as the "Chrysanthemum Dinner" and "Chrysanthemum Cocktails" were held.
